Runbooks are where strategy becomes operational reliability. In NG112 programs, runbooks should define who acts, in what sequence, with which evidence, under which escalation rules.

Essential runbook families

  • Pre-change validation and approval.
  • Live incident triage and escalation.
  • Recovery and rollback procedures.
  • Post-incident review and corrective action closure.

Quality criteria

A runbook is only useful if it is tested under realistic conditions. Static documentation that has never been exercised during stress events is a false control.

Commentary

Organizations often underestimate runbook debt. As architecture evolves, runbooks drift. A governance cycle should review and validate runbooks at the same cadence as technical releases.

Minimum governance standard

  1. Named owner per runbook.
  2. Version history and change approvals.
  3. Test evidence attached to each revision.
  4. Clear mapping to legal/regulatory responsibilities.
