Media
Real-Time Text
RTT is not SMS. It is an interactive media mode that can run alongside voice and video, making emergency communication more accessible and faster for callers who cannot use voice reliably.
What it does
Real-Time Text sends characters as they are typed, enabling conversational text during emergency communications.
RTT supports equivalent access and can become part of a multimedia emergency session delivered to the PSAP.
How it works
- Characters are transmitted progressively rather than waiting for a completed message.
- RTT can be negotiated as part of a multimedia session.
- The PSAP needs call-handling tools that display and record the text stream.

- Training treats RTT as a side channel.
Implementation considerations
