IP Call Handling
Call handling in NG112 must handle emergency identity, callback, location display, transfers, media, notes, logging and sometimes integration with CAD or GIS. A voice-only call-taking position will not expose the full value of NG112 data.
What it does
IP call handling is the PSAP-side capability to answer and manage emergency sessions delivered through modern IP networks.
It is where the incoming emergency session becomes an operational conversation and dispatch workflow.
How it works
- Receives signaling and media from PSAP interconnect.
- Presents caller and location context to the call taker.
- Supports transfer, conference, callbacks and incident notes.
Key interfaces and protocols
- SIP/media
- Location display
- CAD/GIS
- Recording
Systems it interacts with
- PSAP
- GIS
- CAD
- Recording
- RTT
- Video
Common failure modes
- Answer position supports voice but not data.
- Callback number is not preserved.
- Transfer loses context.
- User interface buries important location updates.
Implementation considerations
- Prototype call-taker screens with real workflows.
- Test peak and outage scenarios.
- Train on non-voice media.
