SIP and Emergency Signaling
SIP Geolocation
SIP Geolocation is not the location object itself. It tells SIP-aware systems where location is in the message or where it can be retrieved. That distinction matters because emergency routers and PSAP systems may support location-by-value, location-by-reference, or only a subset of expected behavior.
What it does
SIP Geolocation is the signaling mechanism used to carry or reference location information in a SIP session.
It lets routing functions and PSAPs find the caller location associated with the emergency session.
How it works
- Includes location information or a reference in SIP signaling.
- Allows downstream functions to route or display location.
- Can interact with privacy and retention rules.
Key interfaces and protocols
- IETF RFC 6442
- PIDF-LO
- SIP INVITE
- Location-by-value/reference
Systems it interacts with
- SIP clients
- BCF
- ESRP
- ECRF
- PSAP
Common failure modes
- Location body omitted from message.
- Reference is unreachable from emergency network.
- Privacy handling blocks operational use.
- SBC normalization removes required headers.
Implementation considerations
- Test through every SIP hop.
- Do not assume location by reference is supported end to end.
- Keep privacy policy aligned with emergency service needs.
Standards
- IETF RFC 6442
- IETF RFC 4119
